Hilal Ahmed Rathar hails from Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir. His brother-in-law Dr Mohammed Ayub Mattoo said that Hilal’s father Mohammad Abdullah Rather was also part of the Light Infantry of the Indian Army in Jammu and Kashmir. He had fought a war against China in Ladakh in 1962 and won a picket. This picket was then named Rathar Picket.
Father saw Hilal’s dream of becoming an Air Force officer
Mattoo said that his father’s dream was that Hilal became an officer in the Indian Air Force. His mother dreamed of Eid’s moon a day before Hilal’s birth. After his birth, his father named him Hilal. Hilal means moon. Mattoo said that his father was full of passion like Hilal. If he were alive today, he would have been happy to see the success of his son.
Hilal is the youngest of five siblings
Ayub Mattoo said that Air Commodore Hilal is the youngest of five siblings. Hilal started with Anantnag. He then enrolled in Sainik School Nagrota. Later he got selected in NDA Pune. At that time during the pass out, the then President of India was given the Sword of Honor. He was the first citizen of South Kashmir to receive this honor. After this, he did not look back.
Hilal is currently the air attache of India in France. He was commissioned in the Airforce in 1988. From becoming a flight lieutenant to now becoming an Air Commodore, he did not look back. He has experience of more than 3000 hours of accident-free flight on MiG-21, Mirage-2000, and Kiran planes. In the year 2010, he has received the Air Force Medal for outstanding service work as a Wing Commander.
