Railways will buy goods only from local vendors, big change in policy

New Delhi Indian Railways is going to make a big change in the Public Procurement Policy for Self-reliant India Mission (Atma Nirbhar). According to sources, the Railways has prepared changes in Public Procurement Policy and has also sought advice from the DPIIT Department under the Ministry of Commerce.

Under the change in policy, many changes will be made in the policy to promote and facilitate local vendors. For example, helpline numbers and FAQs will be included, through which local vendors will be able to easily answer any questions related to doing business with the railways.

According to sources, the emphasis will be on buying more goods from local vendors only. For this, the railway government will buy more goods through e-marketplace or GeM portal. Railways purchase goods worth about Rs 50,000-70,000 crores annually through public procurement. The major benefit of the change in railway policy will be given to the manufacturing sector of the country, especially the MSME sector.

Recently, the Finance Ministry has changed the government procurement policy and insisted on not buying goods from neighboring countries like China and Pakistan. The government recently announced an economic package of 20 lakh crore rupees under the Atma Nirbhar bharat abhiyan to tackle the outbreak of Coronavirus and boost the economy.

According to an official of the Finance Department, there can be a rapid recovery in the country after the Corona crisis. To overcome the economic slowdown caused by Kovid-19, the dependence on agriculture has increased now more than before. The development of agriculture sector will also have an impact on manufacturing and FMCG sector.
