new Delhi: The court has convicted former Samata Party president Jaya Jaitley and two others in a 20-year-old case of corruption in the defense deal. The sensational disclosure of corruption in the defense deal was made by a news portal. CBI Special Judge Virendra Bhat of Jaya Jaitley and his former aides in the party Gopal Pacherwal and Major General SP Murgai were convicted of corruption and criminal conspiracy.
In a judgment pronounced by the court on July 21, Jaitley had illegally collected Rs 2 lakh from Matthew Samuel, a representative of the suspect company Westend International, while Murgai received Rs 20,000. Surendra Kumar Surekha along with the three accused were parties in the criminal conspiracy case but Surekha later became a government witness.
The court convicted the three accused Jaya Jaitley, Gopal Pacherwal and SP Murgai under criminal conspiracy Section-120B of the IPC and Section-9 of the Anti-Corruption Act (taking bribes to use personal influence on public servants). The court has fixed July 29 to discuss the sentence.
The court stated that the evidence provided by the prosecution proves that in a hotel room meeting on 25 December 2000, Surekha and Murgai issued a letter to the Ministry of Defense asking the Ministry of Defense to evaluate the product manufactured by its company. Gave confidence Apart from this, arranged his meeting with Jaya Jaitley so that political protection can be obtained.
The court said that it was agreed that Samuel would give one lakh rupees to Surekha and Murgai, while for this Jaitley would be given a sum of two lakh rupees. The court said, “There was an agreement between the officials concerned to use corruption and personal influence to obtain an evaluation letter for the product related to tax illegally.”
It is noteworthy that Jaitley, a close aide of Fernandes, resigned from the post of president after being accused of corruption. A charge sheet was filed in this case in the year 2006 and charges were framed in the year 2012.
