Malda: The people of Malda district are facing double wounds of Corona and flooding these days. Corona snatched employment from people and floods rendered them homeless. People’s homes have been submerged by the flood waters. People are spending the day under the open sky. Not only this, people have to wander from boat to village for drinking water. 10 to 15 houses on the banks of the Vidhannagar village of Muchiya Gram Panchayat are facing the threat of river erosion. Half of these houses are swinging in the air whenever they can fit in the river. Five to seven villages of Muchiya Gram Panchayat of Old Malda block are in the grip of flood. The waters of the Mahananda River have been filled in these villages. These villages are completely submerged. People have been battling floods for more than 10 days. People here said that along with the local administration, no public representative has yet reached to take care of them. The resentment among the people against the apathy of public representatives and local administration is increasing. Mrinalini Mandal Maity, chairperson of Old Malda Panchayat Samiti, said that many villages of Muchiya Gram Panchayat are in the grip of flood. He said that initiative is being taken to provide relief material to the flood victims through administration. He said that a water tank is being sent to provide drinking water to the people in the flood affected area. Boats have been given to people in the flood affected area for traffic. According to panchayat and administration sources, many villages including Sindhiapada, Baruipada, Charalakshmipur, Shivganj, Vidhannagar of Muchiya Gram Panchayats have been submerged in the waters of the Mahananda River for more than 10 days. Hundreds of families of these villages are forced to spend the day under the open sky. It is difficult to collect food and water for them. Cattle are having problems with water for cattle. People have to wander from village to village for drinking water. When they go five to seven kilometers away, they have no drinking water. They are also facing a lot of problems for the children’s food items. The flood affected people said that neither the panchayat nor the administration has been able to get any help so far. On the other hand, Shubhalakshmi Gayan, the head of Muchiya Gram Panchayat, told that many villages in her area are in the grip of flood. He said that in the meantime a Flood Committee has been constituted by holding a meeting in the zone. The committee members are monitoring the situation of the people in the affected area. Block administration has also been informed about this. He said that arrangements are being made to send relief material including Tripal to the flood affected area
